How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Choose what you want to find: the sale price, the discount percentage, or the original price.
  2. Type the prices and percentages. The answer updates as you type. Commas, a currency sign and a % sign are fine.
  3. For deals like "30% off, then an extra 10%", select Add another discount. Add a sales tax rate if it's charged on top.

Examples

  • $80 with 25% off: 80 × 0.75 = $60.00, so you save $20.00.
  • $100 with 20% off, then an extra 10%: 100 × 0.8 = 80, then 80 × 0.9 = $72.00. That's 28% off in total, not 30%.
  • $1,250 with 15% off and 8.25% sales tax: 1,250 × 0.85 = $1,062.50, plus $87.66 tax = $1,150.16.
  • A $29.99 item now $19.99: (29.99 − 19.99) ÷ 29.99 × 100 = 33.34% off.
  • Paid $60 after 25% off. What was the original price? 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.00.

Discount formulas

  • Sale price = original × (1 − discount ÷ 100). Savings = original − sale price.
  • Discount percentage = (original − sale) ÷ original × 100.
  • Original price = sale ÷ (1 − discount ÷ 100).
  • With sales tax, tax is charged on the discounted price: total = sale price × (1 + tax ÷ 100).

Why stacked discounts don't add up

A second discount is taken off the already reduced price, so the discounts multiply. 20% off and then 10% off leaves 0.8 × 0.9 = 72% of the price, which is 28% off overall. The calculator shows each step and the single discount they're equal to.

Rounding

Prices are shown to 2 decimal places. Shops sometimes round each step or the tax differently, so a receipt can differ by a cent.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 30% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.7. For $50, that's 50 × 0.7 = $35, a saving of $15.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The extra 10% comes off the reduced price, so the total is 28% off. On $100 you pay $72, not $70.

Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?

Usually after: tax is charged on the price you actually pay. Rules vary by country and state, especially for coupons and manufacturer rebates, so check your receipt.

What if the sale price is higher than the original price?

That's a price increase, not a discount. The calculator shows the percentage it went up by.

Which currency does it use?

Any. The calculator works with plain numbers and ignores a leading or trailing currency sign, so it works for dollars, euros, pounds or dirhams alike.
